Blog Post: 'Tis the Season...

posted Monday, October 19, 2009 8:30 PM

The holidays are around the corner and temporary hiring has begun. Don't waste this opportunity.

Hiring on to a retailer, manufacturer, or shipping company (to name a few) that offer seasonal positions is a great way to earn extra cash while you look for a career in your chosen profession. But look beyond that.

Becoming a seasonal employee is a great way to secure holiday discounts (depending on the company you go with) and to get your foot in the door with a potential full-time employer. Think about it. If you were a store or facility manager, would you let a great seasonal employee go at the beginning of the year and retain your under-performing employees?

Companies that hire seasonal employees tend to do their best to retain those employees that show great potential and they use those added heads to eliminate employee have begun to under-perform.

Further, if you focus on getting a seasonal position with a company that offers the type of roles you are looking for, once the season is over, you may be given the opportunity to interview for the role that better fits your skill set. If not, after being an employee for a year or so, most companies allow employees to interview for internal transfers. That would be another opportunity for you to get back into your chosen profession. In the mean time you'd be gaining valuable experience within the operational side of the organization.

I'm sure the salary won't be what you're looking for in the seasonal role, but don't fail to see the opportunity in taking the position. I've seen many people go from part-time, seasonal employees to full-time exempt leaders within 12 months.

Have faith, be positive, and focus on a solid interview and a flattering resume.

As always, if there's anything we at Career Development Services (www.CareerDevelopmentAZ.com) can do for you, let us know.

Good luck in your search!
