Blog Post: Required reading: put these RSS feeds on your watch list
posted Thursday, October 8, 2009 11:33 AM
No one Web site, even one as comprehensive as Jobing.com, can be all things to all job seekers. It’s worth putting together a job-hunting dashboard to be able to access all the blogs and other RSS feeds you want to review on a daily basis. I recently ran across a great list of 100 top career blogs put together by RiseSmart. There are many different types of blogs and websites featured, but a few are worth taking a regular look at. Here are a few of my favorites, and brief explanations on why they’re good to follow if you care about your career. I’ve blogged before about Dan Schawbel’s blog and its laser-like focus on how to create a career brand for your self. Schawbel’s an expert about Generation Y, but his tips on helping make an indelible positive impression on others can work for just about anyone. Want to get more out of your LinkedIn account? Scott Allen’s site is an unofficial guide to leveraging the social network for all it’s worth. From how to write an enticing status update to his guide to 100+ smart ways to use LinkedIn, there’s plenty of advice for making connections and headway in your job search or business here. Not strictly a career site in the vein of Jobing.com and others, Web Worker Daily is a virtual water cooler for those who do most of their work on or with the Web. That includes Web developers, content producers, designers and associated geeky hangers-on. The site’s blog has lots of product/service alerts and reviews and articles that touch on Web-based workflow, remote telework arrangements, the impact of the Internet on the job market, and much more. Alexander Kjerulf calls himself the world’s leading expert on happiness at work. His blog, associated with his book “Happy Hour is 9 to 5,” focuses on morale and motivation in the workplace. If you want your next work setting to be fun, happy and energized, read Kjerulf’s posts regularly! Bob Sutton’s Work Matters blog Sutton, a Professor of Management Science and Engineering in the Stanford Engineering School, studies the links between managerial knowledge and organizational action, innovation, and organizational performance. He’s written a number of very good books on organizational management, the latest one being “The No A**hole Rule: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn’t,” which focuses on rude workplace behavior and what to do about it. He blends well-seasoned opinion with his research and experiences in academia, creating a very interesting blog with a unique on the operational state of the American workplace. Curt Rosengren calls himself a “Passion Catalyst” and his blog focuses on how to craft a life of Meaning, Abundance & Passion (hence the M.A.P. in the blog title). He is a good read when you need a pep talk during the job hunt (or if you are trying to decide whether to move on to your next opportunity) or if you just need perspective on what your vocation is and how to live it out on the job.
